Marvin Numeroff, 84, was born on August 12th, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York. Loving husband to his wife Susan, devoted father to their daughter Olive, and his three children from his previous marriage: his son, Richard, his daughters Ilene, Karen, and his three grandchildren Ben, Sam, Alice and his daughter in law Charlotte.
Marvin, a lifelong native New Yorker: successful entrepreneur, published biochemist, restaurateur, gallerist, art collector, and military veteran. He served in the US Medical Corps at Fort Belvoir, Virginia from 1952 – 1954. Afterwards, he worked as a Biochemist Research Associate in Endocrinology at Maimonides Medical Center.
Marvin earned a B.S. and M.S. from New York University. In 1964 he founded Universal Diagnostic Laboratories, Inc. which became among the first medical clinics to offer HIV/AIDS testing. He also co-founded American Medical Laboratory in Israel and another in Egypt. Marvin was thanked by the City of New York and the Commissioner on Clinical Laboratories for his term as Chairman of the Board of Examiners Advisory Committee. Marvin received the Brother’s Keeper Award for his humanitarian efforts in support of Israel’s Red Cross Service, and was made a member of the Israel Prime Minister’s Club for his distinguished participation in the State of Israel Bond Endeavor.
As a Restaurateur, he partnered with Chef Terrance Brennan to create Picholine, Artisanal Fromagerie & Bistro, and Artisanal Premium Cheese in Manhattan. He partnered with Francis Mallmann to create Patagonia West restaurant in the Hamptons. Marvin also created the Concorde Gallery in SoHo during the 1980’s where he gave some of the first gallery shows to artists Kiki Smith, Robert Longo, and Cindy Sherman. An avid philanthropist and patron to the arts, Marvin served as a director on the board of the Brooklyn Arts Council for decades and is a founding patron at the new Whitney Museum (2015).
To his family, friends, and acquaintances: a true renaissance man, caring mentor, skilled photographer, talented sculptor, ruthless tennis player, and outspoken fitness enthusiast.
